Capricorn Men

Capricorn men practically invented the idea of pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. In the late 1800s, Capricorn Horatio Alger wrote highly popular rags-to-riches tales of young men from poor backgrounds climbing out of poverty through honesty and self-reliance. Many wealthy Capricorns, from Andrew Carnegie to Conrad Hilton, have achieved wealth after starting from humble beginnings at a young age. Many Capricorn men show this sign's ability to set goals and then persevere even through great difficulties to reach them.

Sea-goats tend to have an innate awareness of both the heights to which humans can ascend, and the deep abysses where they can fall to through insanity or evil actions. Some men born under this sign have a natural talent for inspiring others people to reach their peaks. This trait is show in the humanitarian work of Albert Schweitzer as well as civil rights leader Martin Luther King, one of whose famous speeches includes the phrase "I've been to the mountaintop." Capricorn Edgar Allan Poe shows us some of the abyss in "A Descent into the Maelstrom" and "The Pit and the Pendulum."

The mythology surrounding the ruling planet of this sign sheds light on a scenario which occurs with some frequency in the lives of Capricorn men. Saturn is the Roman version of Greek mythology's Cronos. Cronos swallowed all the offspring born by his wife Rhea to prevent a prophecy which predicted his overthrow at the hands of one of his children,. After he swallows several of their children this way, Rhea substitutes a blanket-wrapped stone for the last child, leading to Cronos' eventual downfall.

Some Capricorns use the lofty positions they reach to punish or repress aspects of the culture or people of whom they disapprove. Examples of this type of Capricorn behavior include J. Edgar Hoover, Mao Tse Tung, and Rush Limbaugh. Other Capricorn find their achievements derailed by some "swallowed" or hidden part of themselves which eventually manifests itself. Some examples include Richard Nixon's paranoia leading to the Watergate scandal; Tiger Wood's actions tarnishing his reputation as a hero or Mel Gibson's angry tirades.

Capricorn's ruling planet Saturn relates to the concept of the passage of time. At its darkest, this can result in rather narrow and pessimistic life view, perceiving time as a series of deadlines culminating in the last one. Seeing time as a series of natural cadences helps sea-goats develop a less grim outlook. They may see the changes of flora and fauna through earth's seasons like nature writers Aldo Leopold and Barry Lopez. Or they may choose to use a telescope to view the "music of the spheres" in space. They can also experiment with musical rhythms, whether by playing an instrument, composing or through dance and choreography. By creatively altering their relationship with time, Capricorn men can avoid the sign's tendency to isolation and depression.

Inside The Capricorn Mind

Capricorns are the practical achievers of the Zodiac. They are traditionally regarded as money conscious and usually rather thrifty. The goat of Capricorn represents the steady rise of an individual through adversity and challenges towards a better position. This is why Capricorn personalities are depicted as ambitious and focussed individuals.

The negative stereotype of this star sign shows someone who is somewhat grim-faced with a very serious demeanour. However, many Capricorns are the complete opposite, and have a zany, fun energy that draws others to them.

Capricorn is practical, disciplined and patient with a keen eye for details. You may be regarded as a "late bloomer", coming into your own later in life. This sign can be misunderstood due to the aforementioned stereotype.

Capricorn is often to be found on their own personal quest, which may not be obvious to others looking on them from afar. These personalities are good learners, and often learn better through experience along the way.

Traditionally, these individuals are more comfortable in positions beside the king, rather than sitting on the throne themselves. They know that being the leader does not always necessitate being out in front or on show.

Because of this approach, you are not afraid of authority figures. You may be a "King Maker." That is to say, you may find yourself the linchpin of authority, making everything work from behind the curtain. Also, this star sign is good at overcoming obstacles through a combination of will power and good planning.

Capricorn traits include a sense of justice and an innate patience. Such characteristics make you a formidable opponent. Indeed, unlike some star signs, Capricorn is practical and results-oriented. You are able to look at all sides, play the devil's advocate if necessary, and then reach just verdict for both sides.

On the negative side, you may be prone to bouts of melancholy. This star sign can occasionally be overly pessimistic. Association with more effervescent star signs such as Sagittarius and Leo can be a good tonic and energizer.

Capricorns tend to be comfortable with their own company. Hard working, serious, stable and very stubborn this person will do whatever they have to in order to meet a goal. Their practical minds like to solve puzzles and complex problems.

Traditionally, emotional displays are not common, with others seeing Capricorn as cold or unfeeling. That isn't the case however. Some Capricorns have a real sense of fun, and like to express their energy in a more ostentatious manner than this, although they may still have the same sense of purpose and ambition underneath.

In fact, William Shakespeare hinted at Capricorn's mentality with this immortal quote:

"There is a tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;"

Julius Caesar Act 4, scene 3
